#1 – Ford Mustang
I’ll always jump at a reason to include a Ford Mustang on a list, and it’s been sold as a convertible since day one. The 2026 Mustang EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, and GT Premium can be ordered with a fabric top. Cabin controls lower and raise the roof, and a separate storage slot doesn’t affect trunk space.
Mustang convertibles use a semi-automatic system at speeds under three mph. The driver must manually unlatch the top, then use a push button to lower and fold the soft-top. The windows also lower automatically, and the sound system temporarily mutes to re-optimize audio quality based on the new acoustics.
#2 – Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator
The Jeep Wrangler is even better known for its open-air solutions. The 2026 Wrangler has a whopping seven roof options available from the factory. These include mesh and solid sunbonnet tops, a Sunrider folding roof, a power fabric sliding roof, and the three-piece Freedom Top panel roof. Not only that, but you can purchase more removable roofs from Mopar and leading aftermarket brands.
The 2026 Jeep Gladiator midsize truck is based on the same foundation as the Wrangler and carries over many of the same roof options. Add the removable doors and fold-down windshields, and these vehicles put you at one with nature.
#3 – BMW Z4
The 2026 BMW Z4 and Toyota GR Supra are based on the same platform and were developed together. But whereas the GR Supra is a hardtop coupe, the Z4 is exclusively a convertible roadster. This gives BMW’s version the same great performance with unique summer thrills.
The power-operated soft top takes about 10 seconds to open or close at speeds up to 31 mph (50 km/h), letting you adapt quickly. In addition to the cabin switch, you can open the roof by pressing and holding the “Unlock” button on your key fob. Hold the “Lock” button to reverse the process.
#4 – Mazda MX-5 Miata
Not every convertible is expensive. The 2026 Mazda MX-5 is the pinnacle of affordable on-road excitement with the top down, starting at $30,430. The regular MX-5 Miata and the Miata RF offer different convertible roof styles that complement their spritely cornering and sleek aesthetics.
The traditional MX-5 Miata is equipped with a fabric soft-top that the driver can manually raise and lower in a few seconds. The Miata RF has a power-folding hardtop that opens or closes in 13 seconds at speeds below six mph (10 km/h). The added hardtop weight also affects handling, as the Miata RF feels more like a touring vehicle.
#5 – Chevrolet Corvette
Fun fact: the original 1953 C1 Corvette was convertible-only. A coupe was first offered in 1963, and both options have been available ever since. For 2026, a convertible hard top can be added to the base Corvette Stingray for $7,000.
Why so much? The Chevy Corvette uses a complex convertible system with six electric motors that smoothly raise or lower the roof in 16 seconds. You can operate the system at speeds up to 30 mph. Interestingly, however, you don’t need to buy the convertible to enjoy the wind in your hair, as the standard Corvette coupe has removable roof panels.
#6 – Ford Bronco
Like its Wrangler rival, the 2026 Bronco comes with plenty of roof options, earning the Blue Oval its second entry on this list. Four-door Bronco models have a default black vinyl soft top. Two-door models come standard with a modular hard top that has three independently removable panels for the driver, passenger, and rear seats.
However, you can order any roof option with any Ford Bronco. These include an all-season twill “Sunrider” soft top, a Bimini shade top, a mesh top, and more to get your perfect summer driving experience. The Bronco has removable doors, too, and they don’t affect the side mirror placement.
#7 – Porsche 911
With the discontinuation of the Porsche 718 Boxster, the flagship 911 is the only Porsche available as a convertible. You’ll find over a dozen variants of this legendary sport-luxury car that can be converted to open-air summer driving, ranging from the base Carrera to the high-performance GT3 S/C and Turbo S models
Cabriolet models use a fully retractable fabric soft-top. It can operate at speeds up to 31 mph (50 km/h) and takes about 12 seconds to open or close. The Targa 4S and Targa 4 GTS are the only 911 models with a semi-convertible top. It includes a fixed roll bar for protection and a rear window that raises for storage.
#8 – BMW 4 Series
While this vehicle shares a removable roof with the BMW Z4, it is otherwise very different. The larger BMW 4 Series has a second row of seats and more emphasis on the luxury amenities BMW is known for. But that doesn’t change the desire to feel the sun and wind.
Both the 2026 BMW 4 Series and the racing-inspired M4 are offered as convertibles, with the 4 Series Convertible costing $8,000 more than the coupe. The soft-top unfolds in about 18 seconds at speeds up to 30 mph, and BMW uses reinforced panels for weather and noise insulation.
#9 – GMC Hummer EV
The Hummer is larger than life, and that applies to the roof, too. GMC uses a removable roof system straight out of comic books—no wonder it’s called the Infinity Roof. Available via an option package on the Hummer EV SUV or truck, it consists of four clear glass panels and an I-bar above the driver, passenger, and rear outboard seats.
Each panel is individually removable and can be stored in the frunk. New for 2026, GMC has added a sunshade decal kit. The dark-patterned decals cover the panels to reduce heat buildup and glare when you want the roof closed.
#10 – MINI Convertible
I’ll close by going from the largest vehicle on the list to the smallest. The MINI Cooper Convertible is available in the Cooper C, Cooper S, and JCW (John Cooper Works) variants. They offer increasing levels of horsepower and torque, but all use the same retractable roof design.
Interestingly, the Z-folding fabric soft top has three operating modes. Along with full-open and full-close, which can be switched between at speeds up to 18 mph, there is a sunroof mode. Pressing the roof switch once will slide the front fabric section back about 16 inches. This function is usable at any speed.
