2026 BMW 4 Series Buyer’s Guide: Compact Power and Luxury

Even in a world that’s gone crossover-wild, the BMW 4 Series remains a stalwart. While some compact cars are rightly decried as ordinary, the 4 Series throws this out the window. Along with many choices for power and looks, it has a more responsive suspension and steering than its 3 Series cousin, and the 4 Series sits lower to the ground. The result is a sporty driving experience that has all of BMW’s trademark sophistication, everyday practicality, and high-end convenience.

The 2026 edition of this vehicle is now available for people who still love big excitement from a small car. In this buyer’s guide, we’ll look at everything the 2026 BMW 4 Series offers, from the many ways it delivers great performance to the creature comforts and tech. Inside and out, this is a vehicle that transforms mundane trips into thrill rides.

Powertrains and Performance

Whatever your adrenaline desires, there’s a 4 Series powertrain that’s perfect. Four engine combinations are available for the different trim levels, including two mild hybrids. The BMW 430i is equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 hybrid engine, producing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque for daily urban thrills. The M440i moves up to a 3.0L turbocharged I-6 hybrid engine with 386 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque, adding extra surge and top speed. The BMW M4 lives up to its motorsports heritage with a 3.0L turbocharged I-6 that produces 473 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Finally, the BMW M4 Competition is the pinnacle of the M4 lineup, further refining the M4 engine to produce 503 hp in RWD, 523 hp in xDrive AWD, and 479 lb-ft of torque.

Despite the massive power, the hybrid engines in the core models are surprisingly fuel-efficient. EPA estimates range from 31 MPG combined for the 4 Series 430i Coupe to 27 MPG combined for the M440i xDrive Gran Coupe. As for the M4 and M4 Competition, if you’re buying a 473+ hp engine, fuel mileage likely isn’t a priority. All powertrains, except the M4, are available in either RWD or AWD. The M4 is RWD-only, and it’s also the only BMW 4 Series you can still buy with a manual transmission.

As for how it drives, the best way to describe the dynamics is “confidently athletic.” The chassis tuning is agile and stable, hugging the pavement for a smooth ride whether you’re in the urban sprawl or cruising an endless highway. You can also add an M Sport package to the 430i and M440i, which includes performance suspension tuning, an M-style steering wheel, an aero kit, a rear spoiler, and variable steering input. Of course, the M4 and M4 Competition are the best-driving vehicles, with an adaptive suspension, compound performance brakes, a lightweight carbon fiber roof, and gear ratios that maximize power delivery.

Body Styles and Space

Before experiencing those throaty engines, you’ll first notice that the BMW 4 Series is available in not one, not two, but three body types. While each has a characteristic European flair, they are also unique in their exterior appearance and functionality. Here’s an overview of each.

Coupe

As the classic two-door edition, this car is sporty, nimble, and bold. It’s also the only body style that can be equipped with all four available powertrains. The 4 Series Coupe features the well-known oversized gloss black kidney grille, accompanied by slimline headlamps and taillamps. You have a choice of 18-inch or 19-inch wheels. An assortment of black, white, silver, and blue exterior tones is available, complemented by sweeping rooflines that project a calm before the storm.

Inside, the coupe features sport-style front seats available in six colors, with genuine leather or SensaTec, a breathable alternative to leather, upholstery. The fine wood dash trim gives the interior a vintage feel. It features 41.8 inches of front legroom, 34.5 inches of rear legroom, and 12 cu.ft. of cargo space.

Gran Coupe

This 4 Series machine offers a coupe style with four doors and the added space of a sportback sedan. Available in 430i or M440i configurations, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is offered with multiple red hues, complementing the usual colors. The red emphasizes the passion and energy the vehicle brings to each drive. The headlights are positioned more vertically, and the grille features a geometric mesh design with chrome accents.

Overall, the car is 2.2 inches taller than the coupe, providing added headroom, and it is also slightly longer. Most of this length is applied to the trunk, with an increase to 16.6 cu.ft. of cargo area. A set of 18-inch wheels and classic seats, available in seven upholstery colors, complete these machines.

Convertible

Let the sun shine down and feel the wind in your hair. These models transform the 4 Series into a ragtop while selectively incorporating elements from the coupe and Gran Coupe. The exterior lights come from the coupe, while the 4 Series Gran Coupe lends the mesh kidney grille, 18-inch wheels, seat design, and upholstery colors.

A convertible 4 Series can be purchased as a 430i, M440i, or M4. The soft top can be raised or lowered whenever you’re traveling at 30 mph or less, and the process takes about 10 seconds. Even with the top up, this 4 Series model has the most front headroom for tall drivers. Note that there is a trade-off in the form of significantly less rear legroom, rear shoulder room, and only nine cu.ft. for cargo.

Exterior and Interior Amenities

Regardless of the body style and powertrain you choose, you’re getting a luxury vehicle through and through. The all-LED exterior lighting keeps everything visible, and the M models use adaptive headlights that always point in the direction you need. Rain-sensing windshield wipers are standard, and the power side mirrors are heated with auto-dimming and memory settings. The coupe and Gran Coupe also have a moonroof to enjoy a nice glow.

The upscale materials and features inside this vehicle make you feel like a big-time executive. Every BMW 4 Series comes standard with power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and ambient lighting. You can also opt for ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and additional upgrades.

On-Board Technology

The finishing touch of the BMW 4 Series sport luxury theme is its abundance of forward-thinking tech. BMW’s iDrive 8.5 infotainment system operates a 14.9-inch curved touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge display. Some of the standard infotainment features include in-dash navigation, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, a one-year SiriusXM with 360L subscription, ten speakers, and a wireless charging pad. Add remote start and a 16-speaker Harmon Kardon system if you’re feeling frisky.

A host of driver assistance technologies is also standard, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian avoidance, front and rear collision warnings, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, rear cross-traffic alerts, active blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and driver attention alerts. The optional BMW Driving Assistance Professional Package includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, traffic jam assistance, front cross-traffic alerts, automatic lane changing, remote control parking, and other features designed to put you in the right hands.

Experience Sporty Elegance in the BMW 4 Series

BMW has once again demonstrated that if car sales are declining, this German automaker won’t let them fall without a fight. The 2026 4 Series defies its compact size with the versatility to be an efficient daily driver, an inspiring blast of excitement, or both in the same trip. Its choice of powertrains, body styles, and luxurious comforts lets you tailor the 4 Series to your tastes and budget.
