The Refreshed 2026 Grand Cherokee: What to Know About Jeep’s Luxury SUV

For over 30 years and five generations, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has offered sophistication and legitimate off-road capability in just the right size. It’s tough enough to get away from city streets and highways, and it’s available with three rows of seating for large families. At the same time, the Grand Cherokee is maneuverable in downtown areas and offers amenities for upscale cruising.

Jeep is always working to improve its vehicles, and the 2026 Grand Cherokee receives a significant mid-cycle refresh. Building on the fifth-generation model introduced in 2022, this new Grand Cherokee sports changes to the powertrain, infotainment, trim family, and more. Here’s how Jeep has continued to march its luxurious SUV forward in a crowded market.

A Strong Hurricane Engine Replaces the 4xe

The 2026 Grand Cherokee still has two powertrain options like the 2025 model, but 50% of those options are new. Jeep’s base engine remains the same, with the tried-and-true Pentastar 3.6L V6 producing 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque for everyday driving. However, Jeep has discontinued the 4xe with its PHEV powertrain, not just on the Grand Cherokee but across all Jeep models. This is part of a larger shift in the brand’s strategy as it starts moving towards mild hybrids.

A good engine arrives in the 4xe’s place, though. Grand Cherokee shoppers can now level up to an aptly named Hurricane 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine. Its output is incredible for its size, with 324 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque for extra bite on highways, hills, and in other situations that demand power. The automatic transmission remains an eight-speed, but Jeep uses a beefier 880RE transmission to handle the extra power.

The Hurricane engine has the same 6,200-pound towing capacity as the Pentastar V6, and it’s available with RWD or 4WD. Furthermore, despite generating more power, the Hurricane gets better fuel mileage, with an EPA-estimated 23 MPG combined. That’s the same as the 4xe, and you never need to plug it in for a charge. After losing the HEMI V8 after 2024, the Grand Cherokee gets some swagger back with this engine.

Jeep Trims Down Its Trim Lineup

One thing that I found disconcerting about the 2025 Grand Cherokee had nothing to do with the performance, but rather the avalanche of options. Including the 4xe, there were a whopping 12 trim levels to choose from. Some people may find this level of choice appealing, but others may find it overwhelming. When you have many similar trim levels, it can be hard to decide.

Jeep fixes this in 2026, nearly halving the number of Grand Cherokee trim levels. There are now seven grades, each with a more defined position among buyers. Each is also now available as a larger Grand Cherokee L, too.

  • The Laredo is the entry-level model, offering affordable everyday performance with basic conveniences and creature comforts.
  • The Laredo X adds features such as rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power liftgate, and heated front seats to enhance functionality and comfort.
  • The Laredo Altitude takes the next step up in conveniences, and also makes the Hurricane engine the standard option.
  • The Limited is geared toward 24/7 luxury, featuring quilted leatherette upholstery, fog lamps, heated second-row seats, larger wheels, and more.
  • The 85th Anniversary Edition pays tribute to the original Willys Jeep with standard 4×4, a front sway bar disconnect, hill start assistance, and other all-terrain features.
  • The Limited Reserve is even more suave, thanks to genuine Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and high-gloss accents.
  • The Summit is the premier off-road Grand Cherokee with a two-speed transfer case, an air suspension, a limited-slip rear differential, front seat massagers, four-zone climate control, and anything else you could want.

The only disappointing aspect about the slim-down is that two of the off-road-focused trim levels, the TrailHawk and Overland, are no more. However, you can still get plenty of great rugged terrain performance. The Quadra-Trac I 4×4 system with Selec-Terrain traction management offers full-time command. Features like an off-road camera system and trail maps keep you on the right route.

New Accents and Colors Add Style

The 2026 Grand Cherokee looks a little different this year, as Jeep reworked the exterior and cabin to give it more polish and class. It has a new seven-slot grille, thinner headlights, and a redesigned front bumper and fascia with body-color dividers. This makes the Grand Cherokee approach elegantly at traffic lights or parking lots.

Two new colors for the Limited trim family offer some personalization, with Steel Blue and Copper Shino bringing the total number of options to seven. Also, the base-level Laredo now comes with 18-inch aluminum wheels, up from the previous 17-inch rims, for better stability, matching the rest of the Laredo series.

Inside the Grand Cherokee, the central interface is simpler, with a series of knobs underneath the main screen for climate, volume, and more. It’s not a huge change, but one that users will appreciate. The Summit also switches to absolute oak and liquid chrome accents that blend traditional, elegant style with modern sleekness.

Infotainment Gets Supersized

Speaking of the screen, this is arguably the most notable change to the 2026 Grand Cherokee. Not only has Jeep enhanced the infotainment, but options between the regular Grand Cherokee and extended-wheelbase Grand Cherokee L are now more in sync. In 2025, the smaller Grand Cherokee had an 8.4-inch standard touchscreen and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, whereas the Grand Cherokee L had the 10.1-inch screen across the board. Now, each trim besides the entry-level Laredo and Laredo X comes with a massive 12.3-inch infotainment screen. It has built-in TomTom GPS navigation, SiriusXM, and screen mirroring, though you still need a cable to connect your Apple or Android phone.

If you frequently travel with passengers, you might be interested in the optional 10.3-inch passenger screen with bright QLEDs. This allows your copilot to better access infotainment controls or to independently view mapping, device information, and more. On the Laredo Altitude and up, the Grand Cherokee L now has third-row USB charging ports so everyone can plug in their devices.

Sound-wise, Jeep reduces its Alpine premium audio system from ten to nine speakers while keeping wattage the same. This choice was deliberate to create more accurate audio without the muddied “wall of sound” effect. With the discontinuation of the Summit Reserve, the Grand Cherokee Summit now gains the best-in-class 19-speaker, 950-watt McIntosh system.

The Cherokee Becomes Even More Grand

By balancing Jeep’s classic off-road capability with on-road comfort and refinement, the Grand Cherokee has found a place among people who need a great all-in-one SUV. The 2026 refresh gives the Grand Cherokee a little more gas-powered grunt, lustrous style, and expanded infotainment, without compromising what people love about it.

Offering fewer trim levels makes it easier for shoppers to narrow their search, avoiding the mental paralysis that can result from too many options. With various OEM upgrade packages and add-ons available, you can still make the Grand Cherokee your own. Overall, the 2026 Grand Cherokee is another worthy chapter in the history of this treasured vehicle. Jeep doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it does a subtle yet noticeable shift that makes the Grand Cherokee more well-rounded than ever.
