In the second half of 2024, the Lucid Gravity will hit dealer showrooms. As a crossover SUV version of the Lucid Air sedan that debuted in the 2022 model year, it’s positioned as a spacious, family-friendly option among the company’s luxury EV lineup.
Despite multiple delays, there has been plenty of hype about the Gravity. It certainly has a pedigree to live up to. Among other awards, the Lucid Air was named the 2022 Motor Trend Car of the Year, and the Lucid Air Pure made the 2024 Car and Driver 10 Best List. If the Lucid Gravity is anywhere near as good, it will be a worthy addition to the company’s lineup.

Engine and Powertrain
SUV drivers want some power under the hood of their vehicle, and early indications are that the Lucid Gravity will deliver. Lucid says the initial run will use a variation of the twin electric motors found in the Lucid Air and that the high-performance trims will exceed 800 horsepower. Although they haven’t said what the lower trims might do for power numbers, the Lucid Air Pure has 430 horsepower, so expect something in this ballpark (some experts have predicted 480 hp as the baseline). The 0-60 MPH time should be less than 3.5 seconds. This is not as fast as the Lucid Air sedans, but understandable, given the added weight of an SUV body.
At launch, the Lucid Gravity will exclusively be an all-wheel drive vehicle. The manufacturer has said they may develop a rear-wheel-drive option in the future if demand is high enough, but with all-wheel-drive it’s ready for slick, rough roads. If you like to tow campers, boats, or equipment, the Lucid Gravity has a preliminary rated hauling capacity of 6,000 lbs. This is partly thanks to an anticipated shorter final drive ratio than the Air sedan to improve torque (the exact gear number is not yet known).
Battery Efficiency
In recent years, great strides have been made to increase the range of EVs. Bloomberg reports that in 2023, the average range of the U.S. electric car reached 291 miles, a four-fold jump in just 12 years. Still, the Lucid Gravity is reported to blow past this number. Lucid trumpets the Gravity’s maximum range as topping 440 miles. By comparison, the 2023 Lucid Air Pure comes in at 419 miles, and the Rivian R1S electric SUV has an estimated range of 321 miles. As for gas-powered competitors, the best-selling Toyota RAV4 gets an EPA-estimated 30 MPG city/highway with a 14.5-gallon tank for a range of 435 miles, giving the Lucid Gravity a slight edge.
However, it’s unclear which Gravity trims will offer this much range. Until we know more, it would be fair to assume that the higher-end Lucid Gravity editions should hit the 440-plus marker, but the more budget-friendly versions may have a smaller or less efficient battery. Still, it would have to be a huge downgrade to fall into the “meh” range.
The Gravity is reportedly based on the same 900-volt architecture as Lucid’s other vehicles. This would give it a maximum charging rate of 300 kilowatts an hour, the second-fastest on the market, trailing only the GMC Hummer EV Pickup. The manufacturer says that adding 200 miles of range will take about 15 minutes, making it almost comparable to a traditional gasoline fill-up.
Performance and Suspension
Many people buy SUVs because they like driving on every type of terrain. Although it’s a luxury SUV, first and foremost, the Lucid Gravity has several planned features conducive to off-roading. The shorter drive ratio helps with low-speed rock crawling and dune bashing. An optional adaptive air suspension will have a minimum of four modes, including an Off-Road mode that sets the “Zero Gravity” suspension at its highest height for improved ground clearance.
On the main roads, you will ride comfortably on a version of the Air sedan’s five-link front suspension, automatically adjusting for optimum handling and comfort based on speed. You can also get the Gravity with active rear steering. Finally, the Gravity has staggered wheels, with the rear wheels one inch larger than the front to improve handling and grip on any surface. You can choose 20/21-inch-, 21/22-inch, or 22/23-inch wheels.
Interior
Inside the Lucid Gravity is where it earns its luxury stripes. Each vehicle will have two or three rows of seating for up to seven people. Exact headroom and legroom measurements haven’t been released yet, but thanks in part to a panoramic glass roof (with a thermal coating to reduce heat and glare) and a low floor, it’s a very spacious SUV for its size. The five-seat Gravity interior is approximately 112 cubic feet, while the seven-seat edition is 120 cubic feet.
When it comes to storage, Lucid is advertising an eight-cubic-feet front trunk. This is not as big as the Rivian R1S, but enough for everyday needs. The third-row seating can be folded flat for additional storage, and the “frunk” has integrated cupholders and an extendable lower edge for hanging out. A center console gives you room to secure personal effects. Add cozy, tight-fitting upholstery so you, your friends, and your gear will be ready to enjoy a long journey.
Technology and Safety
This advanced design carries over the Lucid Air’s technology. A massive 34-inch curved screen combines your infotainment and digital cluster display with crystal-clear OLEDs that produce 6K resolution. In addition to the touchscreen, you can use voice command or dual touchpads on the steering wheel. The Lucid App lets you personalize everything from device charging times to seat position. Other standard and optional technology includes:
- A 22-speaker sound system by Surreal Sound Pro and Dolby Atmos for immersive audio
- Three 120V outlets and 6 USB-C ports spread throughout the vehicle for charging and operating devices
- Car Karaoke mode with the words of your favorite songs to sing along
- Lucid Sanctuary and Lucid Spaces make the cabin feel calm through a mix of visuals, audio, massage, and other effects
The manufacturer has also taken steps to improve safety behind the wheel. Lucid DreamDrive™ Pro is a proprietary driver assistance system that carries over from the Lucid Air. It uses 32 sensors and Ethernet networking for premier obstacle detection, driver monitoring, cross-traffic protection, lane centering, directional alerts, adaptive cruise control, and much more. Owners will also get adaptive LED headlights that adjust based on terrain and traffic.
Pricing and Warranty
Admittedly, a vehicle like this won’t come cheap. All that Lucid has said so far is that the MSRP for the Gravity SUV will start around $80,000. Beyond the Dream Edition, they haven’t confirmed additional trims. Based on the pricing and available trims of the Lucid Air sedan, we could see a Gravity Touring for around $100,000, a Gravity Grand Touring for $130,000, and a Gravity Dream Edition for $150,000, but this is all just speculation. We do know that each Gravity will be covered by Lucid’s standard four-year or 50,000-mile limited warranty and eight-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. No scheduled maintenance is included.
A Modern Luxury SUV
Overall, there’s much to look forward to about the Lucid Gravity. It might not be quite as efficient as the company’s sedans, and the numbers released so far indicate that it has a little bit less trunk space than its rivals. But the sporty power, luxury comfort, off-road options, and innovative tech make it an excellent entry into the EV market as a whole, not just the electric SUV market.
