Refreshed 2026 BMW X1 Prepares for a Model-Year Makeover

When it was introduced in the 2009 model year, the original purpose of the BMW X1 was to fill a void in the Bavarian automaker’s lineup during the early stages of the SUV revolution then sweeping the auto industry. The luxury auto brand had experienced early success with its midsize luxury SUV, the X5, following its introduction in the 2000 model year. It subsequently followed that success with the 2003 premiere of the smaller X3 and, in 2008, the sporty X6. Until 2009, however, BMW had no answer to the compact luxury crossovers and subcompacts from other manufacturers that were skyrocketing in demand. The need to fill that growing gap gave rise to the X1, originally designed as an entry-level compact luxury crossover. The X1 was a solid success, embraced by the car-buying public, and has been a popular model in the BMW lineup ever since.

Currently in its third generation of production, a fourth-generation makeover for the X1 has been announced for the 2027 model year. In the meantime, BMW has opted to refresh the existing design, adding standard features and dynamic traits that elevate the compact beyond entry-level and into the rarefied air of other esteemed luxury crossover SUVs. While X1 fans anxiously await the pending comprehensive redesign, they can enjoy the added amenities and minor tweaks that set the 2026 X1 apart from its generational peers.

Refined Powertrain Provides Power and Efficiency

While the new X1 retains the same base powerplant as other third-generation models, BMW has continued to refine the powertrain for performance and efficiency. It’s that constant search for improvement that has made BMW one of the premier producers of luxury cars and SUVs. In the case of the X1, it helps the SUV keep up with the crowded pack in its market segment.

The base engine in the X1 xDrive28i is a 2.0L Twin-Power Turbo I-4 that produces 241 hp and clocks a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds. For those who want heightened handling and additional power, the sport-styled X1 M35i takes performance to the next level, milking an additional 71 hp from a tuned version of the same engine, shaving a full second off the 0-60 time of the xDrive28i version down to 5.2 seconds.

Unlike the larger BMW SUVs, which use an eight-speed automatic transmission, the 2026 X1’s powertrain features a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that delivers enhanced performance, smoother shifting, and improved fuel economy. The 2026 X1 also features improvements to BMW’s already-excellent xDrive AWD system, offering drivers increased control, tight handling, and better traction on a variety of driving surfaces.

New Active Features Bolster Driver Assistance Systems

While the 2026 X1 shares many of its mechanical features with its third-generation counterparts from previous years, the driver assistance and safety features found in the 2026 offer the most advanced systems available as standard features in the BMW lineup, adding to the level of luxury built into the newest model.  The 2026 X1 comes standard with the basic driver assistance features found in other luxury SUVs, including Frontal Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning. However, new standard features added to the 2026 X1 base trim up the ante and include Active Blind Spot Detection, enhanced automatic emergency braking, and a rear cross-traffic warning, all of which give drivers additional peace of mind on the road.

BMW also retooled some of its tech and safety packages, shuffling the included features and reducing package prices. For example, adding the modestly priced Driving Assistance Plus Package provides access to lane centering, parking assistance, and adaptive cruise control features. For an additional cost, the higher tier of driver assistance technology includes other driver assistance amenities like Traffic Jam Assist and Active Lane Keep. While the additions and shifts in packages may seem minor at first glance, they help elevate the X1’s level of luxury and increase its value. Drivers get more inclusive standard driver assistance features without a significant step up in price, which allows BMW to provide heightened luxury while still offering an SUV with an entry-level luxury SUV price point.

Added Standard Features for Improved Value

As is the case with the 2026 X1’s driver assistance additions, several added features enhance the X1’s value as an entry-level compact luxury crossover. The most prominent changes in the X1 for the 2026 model center around auxiliary systems and accessories, which were once considered optional but are now part of the standard X1 package.

For example, the X1 already had an impressive curved infotainment display that combined a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.7-inch color touchscreen embedded in the center console. The curved display now serves as the hub of the iDrive 9 infotainment system, running on the BMW Advanced Operating System X. This combination provides a customizable interface, improved voice recognition, and a more intuitive user experience than in previous incarnations of the platform.

The newest X1 also features advanced tech that enhances the driving experience. The 2025 model added Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity to the X1’s features, but the 2026 model goes beyond that with standard tech-friendly features like wireless charging and optional Video Augmented Reality Navigation that helps drivers plot a course and stick to it more easily. Other new standard features in the 2026 X1 that were once optional include power-folding auto-dimming side-view mirrors and the Comfort Access system. Comfort Access includes convenience amenities like keyless entry and keyless starting, which are not always included among the standard features for other luxury SUVs in the X1’s class.

The 2026 model continues to offer heated front seats as standard on all trims. The standard Veganza synthetic seat surfaces, along with real wood and aluminum interior trim, give the X1 an unmatched aesthetic appeal that is decidedly upscale compared to other similar crossovers. New for 2026, the Veganza seating surface color options expand to include Smoke White, Castanea, and an Atlas Gray/Smoke White two-tone option.

Updated Exterior Elegance and Style

Though the X1 will undergo a significant redesign in the 2027 model year, minor exterior tweaks to the 2026 model ease the transition. Though not dramatic in nature, they do give the X1 a more refined exterior appearance and a sleek, sculpted, and athletic aesthetic that launches the X1’s design into the next phase of its evolution. For the most part, the new look isn’t radically different, offering a slightly more refined design as the model prepares to undergo a reimagining in the coming model year. Changes are subtle, yet noticeable, creating a modernized look with sharper lines and a more aggressive vibe. This gives the new X1 a muscular appearance that conveys motion even when it’s sitting still. The new, slightly slimmer adaptive LED approach and departure lights feature a novel three-dimensional hexagonal pattern. Combined with a more angular incarnation of BMW’s familiar kidney grille, the updated lights give the X1 a decidedly more modern vibe.

The X1 is also available in a wider variety of colors in the 2026 model year. In addition to the roster of hues available for the 2025 model year, BMW has added brilliant new colors such as Frozen Portimao Blue Metallic, Vegas Red Metallic, Night Dusk Blue, and Dune Gray. The bright, vivid new shades give the X1 flash and appeal, further modernizing the crossover’s overall appearance and helping it stand out from its competitors.

The Perfect Entry-Level Luxury SUV

While the refinements to the 2026 X1 may seem minor, the overall effect is that they create a modernized compact SUV with an aggressive stance and clean lines that hint at the power and performance potential beneath the hood. With the newest version of the X1, drivers don’t have to choose between style and substance. The X1 embraces both traits equally, with slightly tweaked interior and exterior flourishes and a proven, precision-engineered powertrain.

Though the X1 is not intended to be a Bavarian supercar, it offers agile handling and enough power to hurl the well-appointed crossover to levels unmatched by many of its compact luxury crossover rivals. With a massive overhaul of the X1 expected to initiate the fourth generation of production in 2027, the 2026 model offers subtle refinements that amplify the luxury aspects of the SUV’s design, lifting it above the typically sparse standard features found in entry-level luxury vehicles and cementing it as one of the most value-friendly crossover luxury SUVs currently available.
