A Look at the 2024 Ford Expedition Lineup

When it comes to the ultimate in comfort and space in a large SUV, it doesn’t get much better than the Ford Expedition. This is Ford’s largest SUV, made for busy family life, adventures, and transporting demanding clientele. The Expedition has been part of the Ford family since 1996 and has been keeping groups of eight comfortable and safe for decades. Ford has continuously refined the Expedition, and today, it is available in a generous lineup of ten trims. Naturally, shoppers visiting their nearest Ford dealer aren’t always sure which trim fits their needs. It can be hard to discern the differences between each model at just a glance. Plus, there are other options to consider when selecting your Expedition besides the trim. Below, we will give you an overview of the 2024 Expedition and cover the highlights of the many trims.

What Is the Expedition Max and How Is It Different From the Standard Model?

So when we say the 2024 Expedition has ten trims, that is only a partial truth. In reality, it has six unique trims; however, four of them offer a MAX edition. When you see the MAX after a trim name, that indicates that that model will have the features associated with the regular model; however, it will have a longer wheelbase and more cargo and passenger volume. So, if you like the looks and features of any particular Expedition but want more space, ask your dealer if there is a MAX variant. For the 2024 year, the XLT, the Limited, the King Ranch, and the Platinum all feature a MAX edition. That leaves the Timberline, the off-road variant, as the only 2024 model not available in a MAX variant.

Powertrains and Performance

Now, let’s quickly look over the engine options. The 2024 Expedition is available with a 3.5 L EcoBoost turbocharged V6 engine or a 3.5 L EcoBoost high-output turbocharged V6 engine. The high-output engine gets you the maximum horsepower available at 440 hp and an impressive 510 lb-ft of torque. That said, the starting engine is also powerful, with up to 400 hp and up to 480 lb-ft of torque.

The Expedition can tow up to 9300 lbs; however, MAX models will see a slight dip in towing powers down to 9,000 lbs. However, that should still be more than enough for towing a camper, boat, or similar vessel to your destinations. All engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, that lets you make the small steps necessary to stay in command when trailering and going uphill.

The 2024 Expedition Trim Lineup

Now let’s dive into the unique trims. We’ll examine the highlights of each one. However, take them for a test drive and you’ll see there are plenty more features we didn’t have time to cover here.

The XL STX

The XL STX is a unique offering in that it brings the rugged capabilities and comfort for which the Expedition is known for into a five-seater. That’s right; you can get the Expedition with just five seats if that’s what you’re after. If manageable dimensions and better fuel economy are a priority for you and you do not need the full eight seats, consider this trim.

The XLT/XLT MAX

The XLT is where we get into the eight-passenger capacity. It is a solid SUV for those looking for a model under $60,000 with plenty of comfort and convenience features. These include things like Tri-Zone Electronic Automatic Temperature Control, which allows all rows of passengers to select their preferred climate, as well as available third-row USB ports, giving everyone the option to power up devices.

The Limited/Limited MAX

The Limited is ideal for those who love everything that the XLT has to offer but would like some additional comfort and convenience features. We say this because it adds LED lamps all around, including the fog lamps, headlamps, and tail lamps. If you drive in areas with limited or no street lights, you will like these enduring and powerful LED lamps.

The addition of a Panoramic Vista Roof gives you and your passengers sprawling views of your surroundings. Complement those views with the Bang & Olufsen 12-speaker sound system with a subwoofer to enjoy crisp and enveloping songs, podcasts, and more. Plus, you can block out the sounds you don’t want with Enhanced Active Noise Control. The leather steering wheel and the unique stitching paired with the 20-inch machined aluminum wheels give the Limited a distinct appearance.

The Timberline

Planning some off-roading adventures? Consider the rugged Timberline. The Timberline also enjoys the high-output V6 engine and adds Ford Trail Control, a cruise control system specifically for off-road environments. It manages acceleration and braking in low-speed situations, allowing you to focus on steering in unpredictable environments. Additionally, a steel front skid plate adds to this trim’s rugged readiness and off-road style. The 32-inch all-terrain tires also make the Timberline the most ready to explore muddy, sandy, and otherwise unpaved roads.

The King Ranch/King Ranch MAX

Looking for the ultimate in luxury? Check out the King Ranch. It is dripping with sophistication and VIP markings inside and out. On the outside, the 22-inch 6-spoke polished aluminum wheels will instantly catch your eye. Inside, you will notice the massive 15.5-inch touchscreen center stack paired with a 12.4-inch digital cluster providing vehicle and journey statistics. Throughout the cabin, find unique King Ranch style details from paneling to stitching and more. Taking your experience to a whole new level will be the 22-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system. That is nearly three speakers per passenger, so no one will complain that they can’t hear the tunes.

The Platinum/Platinum MAX

Finally, the Platinum is the top trim. It combines luxury with safety and convenience features you do not find in the other trims. These include multi-contour seats with Active Motion Massage. If you tackle long drives, you will love these seats, which fight muscle fatigue and keep you comfortable and energized behind the wheel. A Continuous Controlled Damping system creates a smooth, comfortable ride on any bumpy road. Ambient lighting, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and aluminum interior elements create a stunning cabin environment.

Finally, this trim enjoys BlueCruise, Ford’s hands-free highway driving technology. It uses GPS, cameras, and radar to control many driving functions on compatible roads. BlueCruise can take over accelerating, braking, lane, and speed maintenance. The system monitors your behaviors to ensure you keep your eyes on the road, signaling you to regain control when necessary.

Get Ready to Find Your 2024 Expedition

Ford has come to understand that many different types of drivers want access to eight seats and powerful performance. These trims boast a diverse range of personalities and perks, making the Expedition ready for drivers with various needs and preferences. The important things remain standard across the models, like a 9,000-plus towing capacity, smooth ride and comfortable cabin. The Expedition continues to be a leader in the full-size SUV segment and is worth considering if you’re looking for a spacious vehicle that offers a unique balance of great performance and a host of must-have features both inside and out.
