Your 2026 Buick Encore GX Buyer’s Guide

The Encore GX is a subcompact SUV with much to offer, including impressive performance, numerous trim levels, and much more. When you go looking for a Buick Encore GX for sale, however, it’s worth taking a little time to consider what’s available and ensure you don’t miss out on anything. That’s not always easy, and most people I know are so busy with other things that finding the time to do research and navigate manufacturer websites is pretty low on their list of priorities. I’m here to briefly explain what you need to know when shopping for a 2026 Encore GX so you can get the features you desire in your next SUV. Let’s dig in!

Two Different Engines to Consider

I always like to start with the engine when shopping for a vehicle since it’s both the most imperative component and one of the simpler ones to consider. Buick offers two different engines for the 2026 Encore GX, but your choice can impact which trim levels are available for your model. The standard powertrain for this SUV is a 1.2L turbocharged I-3 engine, which weighs in at 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). While this is some decent power, it won’t blow your mind. The Encore GX manages a smooth, simple ride that appeals to commuters looking for a tried-and-true method to get to where they need to be.

If you want boosted performance, you could consider installing the available 1.3L turbocharged engine, which clocks in at 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. Admittedly, that’s not a massive upgrade, but it’s definitely greater power than what you get with the standard engine and comes paired with a CVT on front-wheel drive (FWD) as well as a nine-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive (AWD), but we’ll get back to that in a moment. If you have the luxury to choose, I would suggest going with the 1.3L powertrain on any new Encore GX or finding a used model paired with it, as it delivers an even smoother ride with enough extra “oomph” to take on less-than-ideal road conditions, especially with AWD.

Second, Front- or All-Wheel Drive?

Your second decision to make is whether FWD works for you or if you prefer AWD. The powertrain and setup of your choice will depend greatly on the kind of driving you do and what sort of roads and conditions you regularly deal with. If bad weather, including slush and snow, is something you must drive in often, then a model with AWD is likely your best choice. Similarly, if you drive on a lot of dirt and gravel roads, AWD is generally better than FWD, and it will keep you in control with superior traction in those conditions.

I should also mention that if you go with AWD and the 1.3L engine, it comes paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission rather than the standard CVT you get with FWD. Some people like the smoothness of a CVT, though I’m still partial to feeling and hearing that shift with an automatic; it’s definitely a matter of personal preference. My vote is to go with AWD if your budget allows for it, especially if you live somewhere that can put the traction of your vehicle to the test.

Third, Three Trim Levels to Explore

Now that you’ve figured out what kind of performance and driving experience you’re interested in, it’s time to choose the right trim level. You have three trims for the 2026 Buick Encore GX, and they’re all offered with either FWD or AWD, so don’t worry about missing out on anything there. Please note that the standard 1.2L engine is only offered with the starting Preferred trim level of the Encore GX, with the 1.3L engine available as an option. The other two trims both come with the 1.3L engine, which means you get upgraded performance to go along with their enhanced features. Some highlights of each trim that you should consider include:

  • Encore GX Preferred – As the starting trim of the Encore GX, the Preferred includes 18-inch wheels, automatic on/off LED headlamps, and standard features such as heated power outside mirrors, a manual rear liftgate, plus body-color handles, side mirrors, and more. The Preferred features an 11-inch infotainment display, an eight-inch Driver Information Center screen, and a six-speaker sound system. Cloth and leatherette seating is standard, with a six-way driver’s seat and a four-way front-passenger seat. You also get a selection of safety features like Automatic Emergency Braking, a Side Blind Zone Alert, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
  • Encore GX Sport Touring – You get similar 18-inch wheels on the Sport Touring, though they are Black to match the high-gloss Black front grille and other details. Inside, you’ll find leatherette seating for added comfort and durability, keyless open and start, and remote start functionality. The flat-bottom steering wheel with ST logo embroidery on the front seats adds a touch of style to match other details throughout the interior.
  • Encore GX Avenir – This represents the ultimate expression of the Encore GX, starting with 19-inch Premium Pearl Nickel wheels, LED clear lens tail lamps, and a Black Ice front grille. Inside, you enjoy several upgrades, including perforated leather-appointed seats that are incredibly comfortable, including an eight-way power driver’s seat and a six-way power front-passenger seat. You get heated front seats, a heated and wrapped steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror to help you avoid being blinded by the lights of other drivers.

As you can see, there are some notable differences between these three models, so consider what you’re looking for in your next vehicle before deciding. You can’t go wrong with any of them, but your daily driving experience depends on which one you pick. Of course, the trim level also significantly impacts the price of your Encore GX, so your budget might be the deciding factor on which one is right for you.

Fourth, Extra Options and Features

Finally, keep in mind that you can choose from extra features and options for all three trim levels, taking your level of luxury even further. If you want to go with the standard Preferred model, for example, you can still choose the available Comfort Package to add an eight-way power driver’s seat and heated front seats that are perfect in the winter. If you’re looking for some advanced tech features, then the available Avenir Technology Package adds a wireless charging pad inside along with Buick’s HD Surround Vision system to give you enhanced visibility around your vehicle when maneuvering at low speeds. Other options like a power rear liftgate and Bose premium sound system are also available to provide you with more upgrades to enjoy.

Bring It All Together for the Right Encore GX

It’s easy to get a Buick Encore GX with everything you’ve been looking for in a sleek, practical SUV so long as you know what choices to make! Starting with the engine and drive type is a great way to make sure you get the kind of performance you want, and it can simplify things further as you look at the trim levels and other options. With just three trims to choose from, it’s quite easy to get what you want without comparing a half-dozen models, plus there are plenty of extra options and features available so you can get anything you might’ve missed. Just be sure to take things one step at a time and consider what you want to do with your SUV in the future.
