The luxury electric SUV market is taking off. Some would say it’s “electric” (okay, sorry for the pun). More manufacturers continue to throw their hats in the ring, pushing one another to come up with SUVs with better range, faster acceleration, more powerful batteries, and more advanced technology. For a long time, Tesla was the name on the tip of everyone’s tongues when conversations around upscale electric SUVs took place. But there’s a new player in town: Lucid. And it has not only managed to keep up with Tesla’s creations. It has possibly even managed to outpace Musk’s brand of sleek EVs.
I know that brand loyalty can be strong. If you’ve already been a Tesla owner, switching to a new BEV manufacturer can be scary and even emotional. If you’ve never owned a luxury BEV before, you might feel safest going with something with more brand recognition. But I’ve done a deep dive into the Tesla Model X and the new 2026 Lucid Gravity, and it’s clear that Lucid is making a strong push to outperform Tesla. And it’s working. Here are eight reasons to choose the Lucid Gravity over the Tesla Model X.
#1 – A Lower Price for Higher Value
Nobody’s going to suggest that either of these vehicles is affordable. The budget-conscious are not the target audience for these vehicles. Still, even the financially blessed like to see their money go as far as it can (they usually get rich by being smart with money, after all!) And if you want more BEV bang for your buck, it’s in the Lucid Gravity.
The 2026 Lucid Gravity is going to start at $79,900. The 2026 Tesla Model X pricing isn’t out yet. However, the updated 2025 model already starts at a higher MSRP than the 2026 Lucid Gravity. The 2025 Model X starts at just over $89,990. Given inflation, we can safely assume the 2026 Model X will have a starting price even higher. Once you see how much more the Lucid Gravity has to offer, the price discrepancy just doesn’t make sense. It seems like Tesla is really hoping to ride the coattails of its past without adding value to back it up.
#2 – A Greater Electric Range
Electric range is always a top concern for any EV shopper. Even though public charging stations are becoming more common and faster, nobody enjoys taking time out of their day to plug in. And on the rare occasion that you forget to plug into your home charger at night, it’s nice to know your battery might still get you from point A to point B without unexpected time at the charger in the morning.
All of this is to say that the Lucid Gravity far outshines the Tesla Model X in the electric range space. It has an estimated range of 450 miles, while Tesla’s Model X tops out at an estimated 350 miles. That falls very short of the Lucid Gravity’s range. You can easily drive for 100 extra miles in the Lucid Gravity before having to plug in.
#3 – Faster Charging
Even with its impressive range, the Lucid Gravity can’t drive forever on one charge. The good news is that when you do need to plug in, you won’t be stuck at the charger for long. The Lucid Gravity can add up to 200 miles of range in under 11 minutes. The Tesla Model X can get you 171 miles of range in 15 minutes. So naturally, you’d be there even longer to get you up to 200 miles. Plus, Lucid is now using a Tesla-style NACS port for easier charging. Whether you keep a packed schedule or just can’t stand waiting at the charging stations, you’ll appreciate how efficiently the Lucid Gravity recharges.
#4 – Bigger Towing Possibilities
While you might not immediately think of towing when you look at these ultra-sleek vehicles, when the time comes, you’ll be glad that they can drag a trailer. And the Lucid Gravity can simply tow something bigger. With a maximum towing figure of 6,000 lbs, the Lucid Gravity once again trumps the Tesla Model X, which has a towing figure of 5,000 lbs. So you can tow 1,000 lbs more in the Lucid Gravity, which is no small difference. If you have plenty of camping trips or boating days planned, you’ll have more wiggle room as to the size of your trailer and the weight of the items you put in it with the Lucid Gravity.
#5 – More Seating
The Tesla Model X can seat up to six passengers, and the Lucid Gravity can seat up to seven. You never know when you’ll be grateful for that extra seat. When two of your three kids want to bring a buddy on a road trip, you don’t need to turn anyone down (and face the fights that come next). When the parking price per car is so high at the concert that you’d love to get everyone in just one vehicle, you’ll be glad for that extra seat. And hey, on days you don’t fill it with a person, you can fill it with cargo. It just never hurts to have an extra seat. But it can definitely hurt to be short a seat.
#6 – Larger Cargo Capacity
Travel with a ton of stuff? You’ll be better off in the Lucid Gravity. It offers up to 120 cu.ft. of cargo space, whereas the Tesla Model X offers only up to 94.5 cu.ft. With over 25 cu.ft. of additional cargo space in the Lucid Gravity, you can say yes to more everything. Want to load up on those bulk boxes of your kid’s favorite juice on sale? You can. Want to bring your two dogs on a hike? No problem. Find an antique treasure at a yard sale that you need to lug home right now (they aren’t holding it—it’s a yard sale, not a department store!). You can probably fit it into your Lucid Gravity. Meanwhile, things might be a little tight in the Tesla Model X.
#7 – Tray Tables
Okay, now this feature just adds a fun, luxury feel to the Lucid Gravity: rear seat tray tables! It’s like traveling first class on an airplane. These tables will come in handy so often. Think of snack time for your rear-seat passengers. Suddenly, they aren’t hunched over their laps to eat their salad or yogurt. They can place it neatly on the tray table. These tables also create the ideal place to put a laptop. Whether your passengers need to get work done on the road or want to watch movies, they won’t be straining their necks looking down at their laps. When professional passengers need to review documents before big meetings, they can see them more comfortably spread out on the tray tables.
#8 – One More Climate Zone
Temperature preferences can cause major conflicts. You’ve seen it happen. You’ve probably been a part of it. The best solution is to give as many passengers control over their individual climates as possible. And in the Lucid Gravity, your passengers enjoy four climate zones. Meanwhile, in the Tesla Model X, there are just three climate zones. That’s still a decent amount, but you could hear a few more “It’s too hot in here” fights than you want (well, I imagine you want none).
