6 Things You Should Know About the 2022 Hummer EV

The name “Hummer” might call to mind visions of massive, gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs from the past. But that’s about to change completely with the all-new 2022 GMC Hummer EV, which is designed to become the definitive, all-electric, off-road machine. Although the first wave of models will only be offered as a truck, the future will also bring an SUV with many of the same great features.

The new Hummer definitely has a lot of great features. If you’re interested in an EV truck, with an eye specifically toward going off-road, then this needs to be on your radar. While GMC hasn’t released full spec sheets or all of the final information on this impressive new machine, we know enough to get excited about everything it will have to offer. So today, I’m going to take you through some of the major features you should know about, and I think you’ll agree that this is one to watch for in 2021.

#1 – Incredible Three Motor Performance

The heart and soul of the 2022 Hummer EV is its incredible all-electric powertrain, which consists of a three-motor system. While a two-motor powertrain is available on some trim levels, the three-motor models are definitely the ones that are getting the most attention. Even the standard, two-motor version of the Hummer EV will have an estimated range of more than 250 miles on a full charge. With the three-motor version, that increases to more than 300 miles, and even more than 350 miles in some cases.

And those motors also create a tremendous amount of power. A three-motor model of the Hummer EV has 1,000 hp driving it, with a combined 11,500 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, GMC has not released any information about payload or towing capacity just yet, but with that kind of horsepower and torque, they are sure to be quite impressive.

#2 – Impressive Off-Road Features

One thing that really caught my eye with the 2022 GMC Hummer EV is its potential for going off-road, something I haven’t seen a lot of with other EV models. Sure, there are some that can go off-road, but I don’t see many manufacturers really leading with it as a major feature. But with the Hummer EV, there’s no denying that off-road capability is a major selling point from GMC’s perspective.

The Hummer EV has specially engineered 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires that are fantastic, and it’s compatible with 37-inch tires if you need even more height. It has excellent ground clearance to begin with, but an available Extract Mode lets you lift that up about 6 inches more to help you get past unexpected obstacles – obstacles that you’ll be able to see with the Hummer’s Ultravision system featuring underbody cameras. There’s even an available Crabwalk mode that lets the Hummer drive diagonally at low speeds to more easily maneuver through tough passages and areas that would be nearly impossible for other off-road vehicles.

#3 – The Performance-Focused “Watts to Freedom” Mode

If you’re more focused on performance while on the road rather than hitting the trail, then the available Watts to Freedom launch control system should catch your eye. This system puts the focus on letting those three motors work together for optimal acceleration. Using this system, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV can go from 0 to 60 in about 3 seconds, according to GMC’s internal testing. Might I remind you that this is a pickup, not a sports car?

This launch control mode lowers the truck by about 2 inches for improved aerodynamics and a lower center of gravity. It puts all of the power of the three-motor system to work in order to launch the Hummer EV with fantastic acceleration. It will definitely change what you expect from your pickup in terms of a reaction when your foot hits the pedal.

#4 – A Stunning Interior

You probably expect a 2022 model to have a gorgeous, luxurious interior, especially an EV that has to compete with brands like Tesla, and you won’t be disappointed. Inside the Hummer EV, you’ll find a stunning cabin that has a perfect combination of innovative technology and refined comfort. The 12.3-inch digital driver information center is gorgeous and keeps you updated with everything going on with your vehicle, while a central 13.4-inch display provides customizable data, vehicle settings, and entertainment controls.

One of the most impressive features of the Hummer EV is its Infinity Roof with modular Sky Panels, which gives you a gorgeous view of the sky overhead. And you can easily remove these panels and store them in the power front-end truck to open the Hummer EV to the environment around you. By lowering the power rear drop glass, you open the interior up even further, while an available Bose 14-speaker sound system creates an audio experience custom-designed for the all-new Hummer.

#5 – Super Cruise and More Safety Features

As one of the newest and most technologically innovative vehicles coming up from GMC, the Hummer EV features the latest version of their Super Cruise technology. This is a driver-assistance feature that allows for hands-free driving and automatic lane changing, which is compatible with more than 200,000 miles of roads (plus that number is growing all the time). So while we might not quite be at the point where full autonomous driving from one end of the country to the other is possible, we’re getting close, and vehicles like the 2020 Hummer EV are definitely leading the way.

While GMC hasn’t revealed the rest of the safety features on the Hummer EV, I expect they’ll be quite impressive. Things like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, a lane departure warning, a lane-keeping assist function, and adaptive cruise control should all be available. If the Hummer EV will be able to drive for you over certain distances, it’s not unreasonable to expect it to also help you drive more safely while you’re in control.

#6 – The Upcoming SUV Model

While details are still pretty scarce regarding the future of the GMC Hummer lineup, one thing we know for sure is that an SUV model will be released following the launch of the standard Hummer pickup version. This SUV will be built on the same platform and will essentially be identical to the truck in terms of engineering, with the same batteries and most likely the same options for either a two-motor or three-motor design. There could be a single-motor version available at some point in the future, but we’ll have to wait and see if that’s something GMC sees interest in from its customers.

I imagine the Hummer EV SUV model will have many of the same impressive features as the upcoming pickup version. The off-road capability is such a big part of the new Hummer that I imagine the SUV will also have features like the Extract Mode and the Crabwalk system to let you take it on trails that might otherwise be impossible to handle. With the pickup model getting a gorgeous interior with its Infinity Roof, it’s a safe bet to imagine the SUV will have a similar design with a removable roof that is gorgeous for any time of day and any sort of weather.

There’s no official word yet on whether it will be a two-row or three-row SUV, but given the size of the standard Hummer EV, either is certainly possible. I imagine it will also have the latest Super Cruise functionality and all of the other impressive features that the all-new Hummer EV will have when it launches in 2021.
