Sometimes, I wonder where the priorities of the general public lie when it comes to cars, trucks, and SUVs in 2017. Most of the new cars being made are more computer than machine, thanks to touchscreens and “hot stone” massage-giving seats (yes, those are real on some luxury cars). Does this mean we value technology and phone connectivity above all else? With how frequently people gobble up the newest iPhone year after year, even if the only difference is a few added features and a slightly faster processor, it certainly seems like we do. When it comes to said phone connectivity, Chevrolet appears to be leading the way. With their 4G LTE WiFi Hotspot (courtesy of OnStar) in every single new model they produce, drivers (via hands-free phone connectivity technology) and passengers are able to use their favorite internet-based phone apps without burning through their phone’s data plan.
Why? Because now, Chevy and AT&T are partnering to offer $20 for unlimited data.
Unlimited Data. Thanks, Guys!
Thanks to the partnership between General Motors and AT&T, drivers and passengers will be able to enjoy a $20/month prepaid unlimited data plan. This AT&T service, available in the 4.1 million Chevrolet and GM vehicles in the U.S. is a real game changer. Of course, for this offer to work, those vehicles need to come installed with OnStar’s built-in 4G LTE WiFi hotspot.
The plan kicked off on March 3, 2017. What was the inspiration driving this collaboration? Chevy owners used more than a whopping 4 million gigabytes of data last year in the U.S. alone. Combine that with the fact that the brand has sold more than 3.1 million vehicles since June 2014 with this built-in WiFi hotspot, and it’s clear that consumers love the idea of having this connectivity in their cars.
In fact, Chevy has more vehicles with a 4G LTE connection on the road than any other automaker.
The $20 Plan
GM hopes to this $20 plan will boost subscriptions for vehicle-based data use, and provide customers with a more satisfactory choice.
Currently, the rates on a Chevy vehicle are $10 a month for 1 gig of data, $20 a month for 4 gigs of data, and $40 a month for 10 gigs of data. These data plans are available through OnStar or AT&T.
Now, this new $20 a month plan for unlimited data is going to come into play, and Chevy will also offer a 1 gig plan for $10 a month.
OnStar’s Built-in 4G LTE WiFi Hotspot
If you’re interested in getting one of OnStar’s built-in 4G LTE WiFi hotspots on your Chevy vehicle, all you need to do is ask for it. It’s dealer-installed, which makes your life easier.
Able to provide you with a much more powerful and stable connection, rather than using data, you’ll always have 4G-powered WiFi for all your devices. This allows you or your spouse to keep in touch with work on a long road trip to grandma’s house, and lets the kids play games, watch movies, or even listen to music: all without eating away at your phone’s data plan. Save your phone data for when you really need it — like when you get to grandma’s house and she puts on Wheel of Fortune reruns.
