Unless you have a specific make and model in mind, the decision to buy a crossover or SUV can feel overwhelming based solely on the overwhelming vastness of selection. In fact, the segment (as a whole) has been blanketed with such diligence that one might have an aneurysm trying to think of an automaker who hasn’t put forth their own offering. Only slightly easier is the task of identifying an offering that manages to set itself apart from its competitors.
Ultimately, the lack of distinction comes from two core shortcomings of the crossover and SUV market. First, that they try to be everything to everyone, shoe-horning in countless features (infotainment-based, or otherwise) while trying to provide the most accommodating cabin, as is possible. Which leads us directly to the second shortcoming: design. Basically, trying to fit so much into a vehicle will inevitably affect its exterior dimensions and aesthetic. Predominantly limited to a wagon or truck-inspired design, all too many crossovers and SUV come across as smoothed-out shoe boxes.
But to (incorrectly) paraphrase Bill Shakespeare, “we are not here to bury crossovers, but to praise them”. Well, we’re here to praise one in particular, but only because (what can we say) it honestly caught us by surprise. In fact, car buyers coast-to-coast seem to agree. So, if you’re interested in the 2018 Ford Escape – Cincinnati, OH we have you covered!
