Revamping the Audi Q5: A Fresh Take on the Compact Crossover

For years, the Audi Q5 has been an appealing choice for those seeking a compact SUV with genuine luxury. Spacious, powerful, and tech-infused, the Q5 brings sophistication to urban driving and long commutes. However, with the second generation having been on the roads since 2018, Audi recognized it was time to refresh the Q5 to keep pace with competitors from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus.

Behold the third generation of one of the world’s most popular luxury SUVs. Introduced midway through the 2025 model year and continuing into 2026, it’s billed as Audi taking the best and making it even better. Does the next-generation Audi Q5 deliver on this promise? Today, I’ll dive deeper into the all-new Audi Q5 to explore how the latest edition improves on its predecessor.

Powertrain: Boosted Performance

I’ll start under the hood (more on the exterior in a moment), where Audi gives the new Q5 a performance boost. The previous entry-level engine has been discontinued, and the two remaining engines, though the same size, have been refined to increase output. The new base engine is a 2.0-liter turbo-four, delivering 268 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 7 hp and 22 lb-ft over its previous-generation counterpart. This propels you from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, offering impressive pep for a daily driver.

For the high-performance SQ5, its 3.0-liter turbo-six also receives an upgrade. It now produces 362 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, a significant improvement from the second-generation’s 349 hp and 369 lb-ft. A seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission for precise shifting remains standard for both engines, as does quattro all-wheel drive, ensuring excellent grip in all conditions.

Fuel economy is also slightly improved, making a noticeable difference on the road and at the pump. However, it should be noted that the plug-in hybrid option from the second generation has been discontinued, which is a bit of a shame since it offered exceptional performance and fuel economy in the same package. Hopefully, Audi will bring back an improved hybrid option in the near future.

Suspension: Enhanced for Superior Road Feel

The differences between the old and new generations are even more pronounced when examining the underpinnings. Like the redesigned Audi A5 sedan, the latest Q5 is built on the Premium Platform Combustion architecture, a chassis designed for greater responsiveness to driver input and a smoother ride. It features an updated five-link independent front and rear suspension, and the steering system has been retuned with a progressive rack that adjusts the steering ratio based on vehicle speed and driver input. The result is a more refined driving experience, with excellent road manners, whether on highways or side streets.

For the Q5 Prestige and SQ5 trim levels, Audi includes a standard air suspension with adaptive dampers. Rare in the compact crossover segment, this setup allows the suspension to be raised or lowered based on driving conditions, using either automatic settings or manual drive modes. The aluminum alloy wheels range from 18 to 20 inches, depending on whether you prefer everyday or sporty driving, and all Q5 trims come equipped with all-season run-flat tires.

Exterior: Sleek and Functional Elegance

The Q5 has always been known for its attractive design, and the new edition elevates this with a form-meets-function philosophy. Every change Audi made serves the dual purpose of enhancing aesthetics and performance. Key features include:

  • Vertical air curtains on the front fascia and active grille shutters that open for better cooling on hot days or close for improved aerodynamics at high speeds.
  • Subtle yet tasteful body lines and shaping that announce your presence without being ostentatious or compromising performance.
  • Visible exhaust tips—dual tips on the Q5 and quad tips on the SQ5—look sharper and produce a more authentic sound.
  • New front and rear lighting signatures with customizable patterns enhance visibility in a way that reflects your personal style.

As before, the Q5 is available in a traditional SUV shape or as a Sportback. The latter features a sloped rear that slightly reduces headroom and cargo space but improves aerodynamics and adds an athletic flair. The choice of body style is largely a matter of personal preference.

Interior: Expanded Space and Advanced Technology

Audi’s attention to detail shines inside the cabin, where the Q5 is more comfortable and well-equipped than ever. Beyond improved driving dynamics, the Premium Platform Combustion architecture results in a Q5 that is longer and wider. The added length is dedicated to cargo space, with the all-new Q5 offering nearly three additional cubic feet of storage area. The passenger room, already among the best in its segment, now provides even more space for heads, hips, and shoulders.

The screens also expand to capitalize on the additional space. Previously featuring separate infotainment and digital gauge displays, the new Audi Q5 now boasts a wraparound control center. A 14.5-inch MMI touchscreen and an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit combine for a panoramic view of essential information. Higher trim levels also include a 10.9-inch passenger touchscreen and a head-up display. When the vehicle is in motion, the passenger display is invisible to the driver to prevent distractions.

Additionally, the Q5 offers some of the best convenience features in the luxury SUV segment. Standard amenities include an advanced smartphone connectivity interface, power driver seats with four-way lumbar support, driver memory, rear privacy glass, built-in navigation, and a larger armrest storage compartment. Available add-ons, such as heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, envelop you in ultimate comfort.

Safety: Cutting-Edge Protection

The Q5 was already one of the safest vehicles in its class, earning top honors from the NHTSA and IIHS. Audi builds on this by adding new driver assistance technologies and enhancing existing features. Standard safety equipment on every 2025 Audi Q5 includes:

  • Front automatic emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Park Assist Plus with rear parking sensors
  • Driver attention monitoring
  • Automatic high beams

Additional safety options are available on higher trim levels or through add-on packages. Standout features include the top-view camera system for greater awareness of your surroundings, traffic sign recognition to highlight hard-to-see signs, and Active Front Assist with multiple tools to help prevent accidents.

These features complement active and passive safety systems, such as stability control, brake assistance, and a comprehensive airbag suite. Although the results of the latest safety testing have not yet been released, I expect this version of the Q5 to earn strong ratings once again.

The Q5 Reclaims Its Crown

Despite its popularity, the Audi Q5 has faced stiff competition in recent years, especially as the second generation began to show its age. The new third-generation Q5 responds to these challenges with a compact luxury SUV that raises the bar. Audi delivers a jolt of enhanced performance, a refreshed look, and cutting-edge technology. It’s all presented in a user-friendly package, proving that a sophisticated vehicle doesn’t need to be complicated.

My take is that if you’re in the market for a luxury compact crossover, the all-new Audi Q5 deserves serious consideration. It offers everything most buyers need and want while remaining one of the most affordable luxury vehicles on the market. Whether you choose the SUV or Sportback, Q5 or SQ5, Audi is not relinquishing its throne without a fight.
