It’s no secret that electric vehicles have been struggling since the Federal EV Tax Credit ended last year, with many established brands pulling back from EVs in favor of the familiarity of gasoline-powered vehicles. However, some newer brands are continuing to forge ahead, and Genesis has just unveiled what might be the new face of large electric luxury vehicles: the all-new 2027 Genesis GV90. This stunning model is a statement that Genesis has entered a new era, and it may just achieve what brands like Mercedes-Benz and even Tesla have largely failed to accomplish.
Celebrating a Decade of Success
The release of the GV90 for 2027 is remarkably appropriate, as it marks the 10th anniversary of the first Genesis to hit the market. It also goes to show just how far the car industry has come over the last decade. When the original Genesis G90 launched in 2017, the full-size sedan came with a big V8 engine under the hood and embodied the traditional take on luxury. The plush interior was high-tech for its time, but had a classic, understated layout that blended the large 12.3-inch touchscreen into an older cabin style.
Today, the new GV90 takes an entirely different route to luxury as a large SUV with a fully electric powertrain. The dual electric motors generate 657 hp, making it the most powerful Genesis to date, while providing a nearly silent ride. Inside, the GV90 is incredibly luxurious, but it trades the old-school feel of the G90 for avant-garde styling and unconventional color combinations, such as Puglia Green and Veiled Indigo or Tyrian Purple and Travertine Beige.
The exterior styling also declares that Genesis is determined to be seen as modern and unique. The distinctive Two-Line headlights that are a trademark of the brand have been merged with the Genesis Crest Grille to create an illuminated “V” across the front fascia. However, the most distinctive feature is undoubtedly the Rolls-Royce-style coach doors on the Neolun edition, which dispense with the B pillar for easier cabin access. Genesis even added 180-degree rotating first-row seats that turn the GV90 into a lounge when parked!
Overall, the styling of the GV90 declares that, after 10 years in the luxury market, Genesis is finished following the pack and is determined to blaze its own path.
A Segment of One
Will the all-new GV90 be a hit with the luxury crowd? It’s difficult to tell. After all, high-end electric luxury SUVs haven’t exactly had the best track record. Even Tesla was forced to pull the plug on its flagship Model X after slow sales, and traditional luxury brands have had even less success. However, unlike many of the other entries in the market segment, the GV90 is less of an electric luxury SUV and more of a luxury SUV that happens to be electric.
With the level of unique features and styling it brings to the table, the GV90 might just be enough to dominate a segment that currently has little competition. And even if it doesn’t work out in the long run, the GV90 is a statement for both its owners and the Genesis brand.
